An impatient knocking forced its way into Cynthia’s awareness and forced her awake. It came again. Thorne? She shook off the dregs of sleep. Surely not Thorne. Fire? Oh, God.

She tumbled from the bed, throwing on her robe.

‘Cynthia, it is me, Thomas.’ The door swung back and the light from the hallway made it difficult to see his expression, but she had no doubt as to the urgency in his voice.

‘Thomas. What is it?’

‘Mallock’s cow is in calf. They need my help.’

She rolled her eyes. ‘I thought the house must be on fire at the very least. I am surprised Thorne isn’t coming along to see what is going on.’ Though it was unlikely he would hear anything in the other wing.

‘I have to go. If I’m not back in time, will you take Thorne out to the river pasture in the morning? There’s a foal I would like him to look at. I think she could be a big winner and, well, I was thinking I might convince him to buy her. He has agreed to use Rufus for his stud, but after our chat this evening, I have a feeling these mares he has are not up to much. He needs to invest in the future of his stud if it is going to be any good.’

Horses. It was all he ever thought about. ‘If she is going to be a big winner, why sell her?’

He grimaced. ‘Remember, I have a debt I must pay right away.’

Men and their debts of honour. ‘If you are going to start gambling away the family fortune—’

‘You know me better than that, Sister.’

‘I do, which is why I am surprised.’

‘The horse should have won by a mile, but it caught a foot in a rabbit hole. Just bad luck. And I would have had the ready money to hand, if I had not paid to have a new roof put on the village hall which I assume you recall was exceedingly expensive.’

It was she who had suggested that it was his civic duty to do so.

‘Anyway, none of this matters except that I must get on or Mallock’s cow will not last the night and I need to know that you will take Thorne out to the pasture if I am not home in time.’

‘Very well, Thomas, I shall do my best to stand in your stead.’

‘Be your usual charming self and convince him to buy the filly.’ He stomped off.

She took a deep breath. So much for avoiding Thorne during his visit.
